Composed Vibration: Wassily Kandinsky from the Collections in Japan

September 12, 2026 (Saturday) - October, 28, 2026 (Wednesday)

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is known as an artist who pioneered abstract art. He conceived that art’s ‘inner resonance’, which he considered to be its true essence, formed the theoretical basis of abstract expression and was a concept with ample opportunities for expansion, making it possible to combine with other artforms.

Kandinsky’s artistic theory was promptly received in Japan whilst his works gradually began to enter the country. This exhibition retraces the artist’s footsteps through collections of his work from across Japan: from his artistic development in Munich where he created ‘The Blue Rider’; returning to Russia; teaching at Bauhaus; and finally, his creative maturation in Paris. This exhibition also emphasizes the Japanese people’s encounters with Kandinsky.

The esoteric foundations of Kandinsky’s painting embody romantic movements, longing for a mysterious existence and the pure joy of drawing forms and coloring. We encourage you to open all five senses when viewing his compositions, which are entrusted with ‘The Spiritual’ of this remarkable artist, and experience the interwoven reverberation of the colors and forms.
