Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai Domain, began full-scale construction of Sendai Castle and its castle town in 1601. The present-day Sendai City was developed on the foundation of the old castle town after the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is commonly known as 'the City of Trees' due to the lush green landscape of the city and its suburbs. This green landscape consists of forested areas that have been nurtured since the Edo period, such as Mt. Aobayama (a designated natural monument), which was the backyard forest of Sendai Castle, as well as forested areas in the samurai residences that were constructed in the castle town, and the surrounding villages and mountain forests.

This exhibition to commemorate the 40th National Urban Greening Fair in Sendai, will feature historical items from the collection of the Sendai City Museum related to Date Masamune, whom laid the foundations for the development of Sendai and Miyagi, as well as items related to the history of Sendai Castle. It will also introduce the original landscape formed the foundation of the City of Trees, as depicted on Edo period drawings and other documents. Please enjoy this opportunity to see the collection of masterpieces that have been handed down for generations in Sendai, the City of Trees.
