October 8 (Sat.)- November 27 (Sun.), 2022

Based on the Elector of Saxony's collection, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister - Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden houses one of the finest collections of classical paintings in Europe. One of its most prized pieces is Johannes Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, a painting which depicts a woman standing by a lighted window. It is known as an early masterpiece that established Vermeer’s unique painting style. A recent major restoration project has revealed the painting of a cupid on the background wall, which had been painted over after the artist's death. Of the 30 or so works by Vermeer said to be in existence, this is one of the most remarkable.

This exhibition features approximately 70 works by leading 17th century painters from the museum's extensive collection of Dutch paintings, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metsu and Jacob van Ruisdael, as well as this work, which has only recently been restored to its original state. This is the first exhibition of Vermeer's work in Miyagi in eleven years, and we invite you to join this opportunity to explore the world of Vermeer and the rich 'Golden Age' of Dutch painting that gave birth to him.
