This year marks the 45th anniversary of the opening of the Miyagi Museum of Art. When the museum first opened, it housed around 700 items in its collection; this number has now grown to around 7,000. The museum collects works by Japanese artists associated with Miyagi and the Tohoku region, while seeking to recontextualize regional art within the broader history of modern and contemporary art. The collection also includes works by artists who served as benchmarks for modern and contemporary Japanese art. The collection of international art is centered on German Expressionism, featuring pioneers of abstract painting such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. German Expressionism had a pivotal influence on modern Japanese art, and the museum’s collection has been shaped by the interflow of regional art with the global art scene.
During the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Japanese word Bijutsu (Fine Art) was created from Japan’s participation in the Vienna Expo of 1873. The collection focuses on works created during and after the Meiji period; in other words, the era of Bijutsu. Amidst the rapid pace of global change brought about by modernization and globalization, people have been captivated by the power of fine art, giving rise to myriad forms of artistic expression. In this exhibition, carefully selected works from the museum’s collection are displayed throughout the museum, showcasing the dynamism and energy of modern and contemporary fine artas it has evolved over time.
Some works will be rotated during the exhibition period, and from the second half of the exhibition period onward, works on special loan will also be on display. A dedicated corner will provide deeper insights into key artists from its collection of modern Japanese art. It is the hope of the museum that visitors will enjoy reuniting with familiar works from its collection, as well as discovering new aspects to these works in the halls of the newly renovated museum.
*Wassily Kandinsky’s works will be displayed only during the first half of the exhibition period, while special exhibition pieces will be displayed only during the second half. Additionally, certain works will be rotated during the course of the exhibition.
