William Morris

William Morris (1834-96) is an English artist, poet, author, thinker and social activist who was active in a diverse number of fields; he is known as one of the outstanding historical figures that has come to represent 19th century England. William Morris was called the father of modern design, a pioneering designer who played a leading role in the Arts and Crafts Movement.

This exhibition will introduce Morris’s life as a designer by tracing the often overlooked time periods of Morris’s life, such as his childhood and his time as a student, all the way to his later years. Morris’s creative activities are deeply connected to his surroundings at the time of his work, such as his ‘home’, ‘school’ and ‘workplace’. In this exhibition, scenic photos taken by photographer ORISAKU Mineko will be showcased alongside a chronicle of Morris’s life as a designer divided into 6 chapters, consisting of Chapter 1 “From Childhood to Adolescence (1834-59)”, Chapter 2 “From Red House to Queen Square (1859-71)”, Chapter 3 “Kelmscott Manor (1871-96)”, Chapter 4 “Kelmscott House and Merton Abbey (1878-96)”, Chapter 5 “The Kelmscott Press (1891-96)”, and Chapter 6 “Arts and Crafts Moment and Morris’s Colleagues"

Additionally, with the help of Osaka University of Arts, this exhibition will showcase all 66 volumes of work published by “The Kelmscott Press” (a printing company established by Morris in his final years) in two parts.

Dive into the world of design created by Morris and his colleagues with around 151 items including interior decoration on display.
