The story of the Great East Japan Earthquake is told through illustrative panels and videos based on the concept of “a place to pass down our memories to the future in order to protect precious lives.” A wide range of information is presented that includes how much damage was caused by the tsunami, recovery efforts, and the activities of storytelling groups all over Miyagi Prefecture. Ishinomaki Minamihama Tsunami Memorial Park

This park was created as a place to mourn the lives lost, preserve the memory of the tsunami and lessons learned from it, and to express a strong commitment to recovery through the combined effort of Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, and the Japanese government. The third version of the “Ganbaro Ishinomaki” signboard now stands to continue giving courage to the local people. Click for more info

Ishinomaki City Kadonowaki Elementary School Ruins

The ruined school building is the only structure remaining today that shows the damage caused by the tsunami-triggered fires. It can be viewed from an outside passageway and shows the terrifying power of the tsunami and the fires it caused. The exhibition hall teaches visitors about past tsunamis through videos and the display of preserved exhibits. Click for more info

MEET Kadonowaki

Based on the concept of “Let’s connect through 3.11 to move forward for the future,” this facility, located near the Ishinomaki Minamihama Tsunami Memorial Park and Kadonowaki Elementary School Ruins, offers storytelling and experiential programs, and communicates to visitors how evacuating saves lives by highlighting the actions of over 100 people and the “chain of evacuation” that they triggered.
