Special Feature: HARYU Shizuo

Born in Tokyo, Haryu Shizuo moved to Sendai, his parents’ hometown, in 1945 due to increasingly frequent air raids. Haryu actively exhibited work while still a student at the Tokyo University of the Arts and first participated in “The Dokuritsu Exhibition” upon graduating in 1957. Winning the Dokuritsu Prize the following year and the year after that, he quickly received attention in the art world. From 1962 onwards, Haryu started work on his representative series titled “Rounded,” incorporating both humorous and eerie elements. Afterwards He struggled with illness during a 13-year period, finally overcoming his suffering in the 1980’s. Pursuing his own unique vision, Haryu changed his art style, using extravagant colors in combination with folk elements.

As Haryu was an important painter with a connection to Miyagi Prefecture, the Miyagi Museum of Art has collected a number of his works. This featured exhibition presents a complete picture of his artistic endeavors through a collection of oil paintings as well as a selection of 7 drawings.
