Special Feature:Painters of the Japan Art Institute and Ota Chou

The Japan Art Institute was established in 1898 by Okakura Tenshin, who emphasized the continuation of and innovation within artistic tradition. Although the Institute at one point reached stagnation in its activities, operations resumed in 1914. This year marks 100 years since its revival.

Using tradition as their basis, the artists of the Institute produced innovative work, playing a large role in one of Japan’s modern art movements. Yokoyama Taikan in particular carried on the ideals of Tenshin and supported the Institute from its establishment up until after the war. Having studied under Kajita Hanko, Kobayashi Kokei and Yasuda Yukihiko refined the linework characteristic of Asian painting and became a focal presence at the Institute following its revival.

The painter Ota Chou, born in Miyagi Prefecture, admired the work of Kokei and Yukihikoand was himself highly praised for his technical skill. The current exhibition also includes his drafts, allowing the viewer a closer look at the artist’s delicate linework.
