In 2012, MISERERE, 58 prints of Georges Rouault, was newly donated to the Miyagi Museum of Art.
Georges Rouault, one of the greatest painters for religious art of 20th century, is also known as one of the greatest engraver. MISERERE, which was executed from original inspiration of Rouault and with a long time, should be called the masterpiece of the painter’s print works. This Exhibition is the first time for them to be shown in our museum.
Rouault shows agony and sinfulness of human in various themes. Certainly his expression is so drastic and severe that we can’t help turning away from the motifs. But another images can be found, which of the Passion of Jesus for the Atonement or the love among human. After seeing all images, we will able to understand that the essence of Rouault’s message is the salvation.
