Establish a foundation for industry-university collaborative research

1.Development of a 3GeV high-brilliance synchrotron radiation facility: becoming a world-leading research hub

NanoTerasu

Japan's first 3GeV high-brilliance synchrotron radiation facility is scheduled to open in 2024 at Tohoku University Aobayama New Campus.

This synchrotron radiation facility, nicknamed NanoTerasu, will be 100 times brighter than the “Spring-8” facility, which is the currently the most powerful synchrotron facility for soft X-ray spectra in Japan.

The high-brilliance synchrotron radiation for soft X-ray spectra enables sensitive measurement of light elements and detailed analysis of "electronic property" and "dynamics" which directly influence material functions.

Material surface analysis which analyzes the chemical reaction and changes of protein and other catalyst materials is expected to contribute to the development of new medication, high-activity catalysts and other materials. Magnetic and spin analysis will play a vital role in the research and development of magnets and spintronic devices.

Miyagi Prefecture will actively promote industry-academia-government collaboration centered around this facility.

2. Creation of Science Park

Creation of Science Park

Tohoku University is developing the area surrounding the next-generation synchrotron facility into a “Science Park”. This initiative aims to create one of the largest research complexes in Japan by incorporating a large number of private companies that will lead to technological innovation.
