Radiation and Radioactivity Measurements at Ports in Miyagi

Measuring Atmosphere, Seawater and Container Surface Radiation Levels

To counter harmful rumors about the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, we have been measuring radiation levels in the atmosphere and seawater at the Takasago Container Terminal, Port of Sendai since May 18, 2011; at the East Wharf, Port of Shiogama since April 3, 2017 (measurements were previously carried out at the Teizan No. 1 Wharf from June 14, 2011 to March 31, 2017); and at the Nakajima Wharf, Port of Ishinomaki since May 24, 2011. Also, since October 1, 2011, we have been measuring radiation levels on the surfaces of containers that enter the Takasago Container Terminal. We will continue to regularly upload the results of these tests.
Measurements are also being taken at Keihin Ports (Tokyo area), which may ship cargo in cooperation with the Port of Sendai-Shiogama.

Monitoring Areas

  • Measurements of radiation levels in the atmosphere at the Takasago Container Terminal, Port of Sendai were carried out roughly 1.5 metres above ground level in front of the truck gate and an average value was recorded. Container surface measurements were also conducted in front of the truck gate and the highest and lowest recorded readings were recorded. Seawater was collected at Wharf No.1 at the Takasago Container Yard.
  • Measurements of radiation levels in the atmosphere and sea water collection at Port of Shiogama were carried out at the East Wharf.
  • Measurements of radiation levels in the atmosphere and sea water collection at Port of Ishinomaki were carried out at the Nakajima Wharf.

3.Radiation Levels of Container Surfaces

If the radiation level of the container is greater than or equal to three times the value of the atmosphere radiation level of the location where the container was measured, as specified in the “Guidelines for the Measurement of Radioactivity in Export Containers at Ports and Harbours” (Security and Management Office, Ports and Harbours Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport) or greater than the standard value recommended by EU member states (0.2μSv/h + radiation dose rate in the air), whichever is lower, the container will not be brought into the terminal, but will be returned to where it was unloaded from.

Furthermore, if a value higher than the reporting standard value (5μSv/h) as specified in the “Guidelines for Measurement of Radioactivity in Export Containers at Ports and Harbours” is detected, we will notify the relevant authorities and consult with them on how to respond.
