Hirafuku Hyakusui

Hirafuku Hyakusui (1877-1933) was a Japanese painter active during the Meiji Period and early Showa Period born in Kakunodate Town of Akita Prefecture. Hyakusui was a member of the Naturalism-centered Tensei-kai and later exhibited his work at art associations such as Sango-kai and Kinrei-sya as well as exhibitions like the Bunten Exhibition (the annual art exhibition sponsored by the Ministry of Education) and Teiten (Imperial Academy Art Exhibition) where his work received critical acclaim. He was also a renowned sketch artist, drawing numerous illustrations for newspapers and magazines. This exhibition offers the most comprehensive look at various aspects of Hyakusui’s career by introducing not only his work but also his interactions with other contemporary painters and poets from the same period.
